As the weather is starting to get cooler, it’s a great time to head down south and do some climbing. While St George has several great spots to go climbing, I’m going to talk about just one of my favorite walls in this post.
Chuckwalla Wall is right outside of the city and is easy to find. To get there from the freeway (I-15), take the St George Blvd exit heading west until you get to Bluff St where you’ll head north. Then continue on Bluff St, passing Snow Canyon Pkwy, and about a quarter of a mile after Snow Canyon Pkwy you’ll see the Chuckwalla Trailhead parking lot on your left. The climbing wall is visible from the parking lot (about 100 yards to the north) and is right off of the Chuckwalla Trail.
Chuckwalla has about 28 routes with a good variety of grades, ranging from 5.9 to 5.13b. These are all sport routes, and the climbing has a lot of pockets and jugs. There isn’t a ton of variety at this wall when it comes to the type of climbs, but it some really fun sandstone climbing.
The wall stays mostly in the sun during the day, so it really is better to go in the winter when the weather is a little cooler. There isn’t any shade at the wall, so plan accordingly if you are going to be spectating during the heat of the day.
